Yelena Isinbaeva (also spelled Elena Isinbaeva) was born June 3, 1982, Volgograd, Russia.

Yelena is a Russian pole vaulter who achieved numerous world records and became the first woman to clear the 5-metre (16-foot 4.75-inch) mark in the sport’s history.

Her First Loss

Berlin (17 August 2009). Yelena Isinbayeva, the queen of global athletics, was dethroned in the first great shock of the World Championships when she lost her first major pole-vault competition for six years.

Caroline Wozniacki (born July 11, 1990, Odense) is a Danish tennis player. She achieved her career-high singles ranking of World No. 8 on August 3, 2009. She is the only Danish woman currently in the Top 300 on the WTA Tour.

She has won several junior tournaments (including the 2006 Wimbledon girls' singles tournament and the 2005 Orange Bowl tennis championship), and made her debut on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour at Cincinnati's Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open on July 19, 2005, losing to the top-seeded and later champion Patty Schnyder in the first round.

US Open 2009 Story

New York (10 September 2009). Caroline Wozniacki ended a Cinderella story but not the ending American tennis fans expected or hoped for really, as she beat American Melanie Oudin at US Open with a 6-2, 6-2.

Wozniacki is a lovely girl and an endearing personality on and off court. I mean how could you not warm to her or her infectious smile. And her post-match speech, precociously asking the New York crowd to support her in her next match now that she may have won over some of the hearts.

But watching her tennis is just about as exciting as watching my blog climb up the rankings.

To understand you have to brace yourselves for this stat, maybe even sit down, and put down the coffee you might be sipping on: Wozniacki advanced to the semis on the back of 5 (five) whole winners for the entire (uninspiring) match.

Ana fell to a frustrating 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 defeat to Czech world No.46 Lucie Safarova in the second round of the Rogers Cup. The 11th seed led 6-3, 5-3 and thus served for the match, but she could not close out victory.



Ana showed improved form from her three-set win over Magdalena Rybarikova yesterday in what was an intense encounter. She was the better player during the first half of the match, but ultimately she paid the price for not taking her chances.



The 21-year-old broke early in the opening set and clinched a one-set lead. A break in the seventh game of the second set put her in firm control and she served for the match two games later. Safarova hit back, as Ana struggled to maintain a good length on her groundstrokes.



In fact, the Czech reeled off seven consecutive games as she took the second set and gained a 3-0 lead in the decider. She was full of confidence and was taking the ball early, in order to nullify Ana's greater power off the floor.



A superb cross court backhand winner, hit on the rise, earned Ana a break-back point when trailing 2-4, but Safarova saved it. The left-hander served brilliantly and could not be denied victory.



Ana's next tournament is the US Open, which begins in New York on 31 August.

Born in Siberia (yes, really), Maria began playing tennis at 4 and moved to the U.S. to attend the legendary Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, when she was 7. (It was a little later than they’re used to at Bollettieri, but they let her in anyway.) She has lived in the U.S. ever since, but she retains her Russian citizenship (and I-must-break-you demeanor). In 2004, at age 17, Maria became the third-youngest woman ever to win Wimbledon—and the first ever Russian—when she defeated Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4 in the final. In 2006, she won a second Grand Slam title, the U.S. Open. That same year, she signed a lifetime endorsement deal with Prince—the racquet company, not the guy who sang “Little Red Corvette” (although she’s working on it). Other endorsements include: Land Rover, Motorola, Gatorade, Tropicana, Tag Heuer, Nike, Canon and Honda (but only in Japan). In August 2006, CBS reported that her annual earnings top $20 million. An estimated 90 percent of those come from endorsement deals.

Looking ahead, you can expect to find Maria clutching more hardware—she’s hungry to accumulate more Grand Slam wins—and probably posing for another photographer or two. In 2006, she appeared in a bikini for a six-page photo shoot in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue. We wouldn’t mind seeing her return that service.
